Catalans

Northeastern Spanish people

Catalans are the people native to Catalonia, an autonomous region in northeastern Spain centered on Barcelona.

The term also refers to anyone who speaks Catalan, a Romance language distinct from Spanish.

Catalans have a strong regional identity and culture, with ongoing movements for greater autonomy or independence from Spain: The Catalans voted in a controversial independence referendum in 2017.
