War
Nations in combat
War is armed conflict between military forces or other groups.
Any particular instance is also a war: the civil war in Syria, the Crimean War.
War also describes campaigns against undesirable things: the war on drugs, the war on poverty.
The verb appears most often as warring: Warring factions conducted raids on each other's camps.
