bubonic

Flea-transmitted medieval scourge

Bubonic describes a form of plague characterized by swollen, inflamed lymph nodes called buboes, typically in the groin, armpit, or neck.

The bubonic plague, caused by the bacterium *Yersinia pestis* and transmitted by flea bites, killed tens of millions in medieval Europe as the Black Death.

Bubonic plague cases still occur in parts of the American Southwest.
