plague doctors
Medieval epidemic healers
Plague doctors were physicians who treated victims of epidemic disease, especially bubonic plague, in Europe from the medieval period through the 17th century.
They are remembered for their distinctive protective costume: a long waxed coat, gloves, and a beaked mask stuffed with aromatic herbs, thought to ward off disease.
The image has become iconic in horror and steampunk aesthetics: The Halloween store had plague doctor masks alongside the usual vampires and zombies.
