plague pits
Epidemic burial sites
Plague pits are mass graves dug during epidemics to bury large numbers of dead when individual burial became impractical.
The term is most associated with the Black Death and later outbreaks in Europe, where bodies were deposited in trenches and covered with lime.
Construction projects in cities like London occasionally unearth plague pits: They discovered a plague pit while digging the new subway line.
