Black Canadians

Afro-descended northern residents

Black Canadians are Canadians of African descent, encompassing both those whose families have been in Canada for generations and more recent immigrants from the Caribbean, Africa, and elsewhere.

The term parallels "African American" but reflects Canada's distinct history, including the legacy of Black Loyalists and Underground Railroad refugees.

Black Canadian history is taught in schools during February.
