Maroon
Escaped enslaved descendants
A Maroon is a member of communities descended from escaped African slaves who established independent settlements, particularly in Jamaica, Suriname, and other parts of the Caribbean and Americas.
The Maroons developed distinct cultures and successfully resisted colonial forces for generations.
The term also appears in school names and sports teams: The Maroons won the conference championship. (Lowercase maroon is a color or means to abandon someone in an isolated place.)
