AstroTurf

Stadium grass substitute

AstroTurf is a brand of synthetic grass, first installed in the Houston Astrodome in 1966.

The surface became standard in many sports stadiums through the 1970s and 80s, though natural grass has since returned to favor.

The brand name spawned the generic term for artificial turf and the political metaphor for manufactured grassroots campaigns. (Lowercase astroturf refers to fake grassroots movements.)
