hard court

Concrete playing area

A hard court is a tennis or basketball playing surface made of rigid material like asphalt or concrete, typically coated with acrylic.

Distinguished from clay courts and grass courts in tennis, hard courts offer consistent bounce and faster play: The US Open is played on hard court.

The term also appears in basketball to distinguish outdoor concrete courts from indoor wooden floors.
