popular uprising

Citizens overthrow authority

A popular uprising is a widespread rebellion by ordinary citizens against an established authority, typically a government or ruling regime.

Unlike military coups, which are orchestrated by armed forces, popular uprisings emerge from mass discontent and involve large numbers of civilians taking to the streets, striking, or otherwise disrupting normal order.

The popular uprising toppled the dictator within weeks.

Such movements may be spontaneous or organized, peaceful or violent, and their outcomes range from reform to revolution.
