Antiphon
Ancient Athenian speechwriter
An antiphon is a verse or phrase sung as a response in liturgical worship, typically alternating between two choirs or between a leader and congregation.
The term extends to any call-and-response pattern in religious music.
More broadly, antiphon can describe any answering sound or echo: The thunder rolled through the valley, its antiphon returning from the distant hills.
