Althusser

French Marxist philosopher

Louis Althusser (1918–1990) was a French Marxist philosopher who reinterpreted Marx through structuralist lenses, arguing that ideology shapes subjects through "interpellation"—the process by which institutions hail individuals into social roles.

His influential works include *For Marx* and *Reading Capital*.

Althusser's legacy is complicated by his 1980 killing of his wife during a mental breakdown, for which he was confined to a psychiatric hospital rather than tried.
