800 numbers

Free business lines

800 numbers are toll-free telephone numbers in North America—the caller pays nothing, and the business or organization receiving the call absorbs the cost.

Originally all toll-free numbers began with 800, but as demand grew, additional prefixes were added: 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, and 833.

The term 800 number persists as a generic for any toll-free line: Call our 800 number for customer service.
