Chat lines are telephone services that connect callers for conversation, often with strangers.
They flourished in the 1980s and 1990s before internet chat largely replaced them.
Many chat lines were marketed for dating or adult talk, charging by the minute: He ran up huge phone bills calling chat lines.
Some still operate as phone sex services.
