home phones

Wired residential receivers

Home phones are landline telephones connected to a residence, as distinct from mobile phones or office lines.

The term gained currency as cell phones became ubiquitous, requiring a way to specify the older technology: Do you still have a home phone, or just your cell?

Once simply "the phone," home phones are increasingly rare, kept mainly by older adults or for reliability during emergencies.
