wonkery

Deep policy analysis

Wonkery is deep, often obsessive engagement with policy details and technical minutiae.

The term derives from wonk, someone who studies a subject exhaustively.

Wonkery carries a hint of affectionate mockery—the person knows their stuff but may bore others with it: The article descended into tax wonkery that lost most readers.

Common in political journalism.
