boffin
British research expert
Boffin is British slang for a person engaged in scientific or technical research, especially one who is highly knowledgeable but perhaps socially awkward or obsessively focused on their work.
The term emerged during World War II to describe scientists working on military projects and carries a mixture of respect and gentle mockery.
The boffins in the lab finally cracked the encryption problem.
It remains primarily British, with Americans more likely to say nerd or egghead.
