women's studies

Feminist academic discipline

Women's studies is an academic field that examines women's experiences, contributions, and roles in society, history, politics, and culture.

The discipline emerged from feminist movements of the 1960s and 1970s and often incorporates interdisciplinary approaches drawing from sociology, literature, psychology, and history.

Programs may also be called gender studies or feminist studies, reflecting expanded focus on gender as a broader category.
