one-room school

Single-classroom education building

A one-room school is a small schoolhouse where students of all ages and grades are taught together in a single room by one teacher.

Common in rural America through the early twentieth century, these schools served scattered farming communities before consolidation brought larger schools and bus transportation.

Also called a one-room schoolhouse.
