gendered language
Masculine or feminine terms
Gendered language uses words that distinguish between masculine and feminine—pronouns like he and she, nouns like waiter and waitress, or terms like mankind.
Some languages assign grammatical gender to all nouns; English does so mainly for people and animals.
Debates about gendered language often focus on whether masculine forms should serve as defaults: A doctor should care for his patients versus their patients.
