white spaces

Gaps between characters

White spaces are blank areas in text or design—the gaps between words, lines, paragraphs, or visual elements.

In typography and layout, white space (also called negative space) gives content room to breathe: The designer left plenty of white space around the logo.

In computing, white space includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks—characters that create separation without visible marks.

The plural emphasizes distinct instances or types of these blank areas.
