wax-resist

Barrier dyeing method

Wax-resist is a decorative technique in which wax is applied to a surface—fabric, ceramic, or paper—to block dye or glaze from penetrating those areas.

When the material is dyed or fired, the waxed portions remain unchanged, creating patterns through contrast.

Batik is the most familiar wax-resist method: The artisan used wax-resist to create intricate designs on the silk.
