canting

Leaning to one side

Canting describes speech or behavior that is hypocritically pious or self-righteous, often with an air of moral superiority that the speaker doesn't genuinely possess.

A canting preacher might denounce sins he secretly commits.

The word also has a technical sense in heraldry, where canting arms are a coat of arms that makes a visual pun on the bearer's name.

As a present participle of cant, it can simply mean tilting or slanting: the canting deck of the ship.
