wattling

Braiding fence material

Wattling is the craft or process of weaving flexible branches, twigs, or reeds into a lattice structure.

The technique produces walls, fences, and hurdles—most famously in wattle-and-daub construction, where the woven framework is plastered with mud or clay.

The old cottage still showed its original wattling beneath the crumbling daub.
