water strider

Surface tension walker

A water strider is a slender insect with long legs that allow it to walk on the surface of ponds, streams, and other still or slow-moving water.

The insect's weight is distributed across its legs in a way that does not break the water's surface tension, creating small dimples rather than submerging.

Water striders are predatory, feeding on other insects that fall onto the water.

They are also called water skaters or pond skaters.
