water softening

Treating hard water

Water softening is the process of removing minerals—especially calcium and magnesium—from hard water.

These minerals cause scale buildup in pipes and appliances and prevent soap from lathering properly.

Most water softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions: The plumber recommended water softening to extend the life of our water heater.
