bypass valve
Alternate route mechanism
A bypass valve is a valve that diverts flow around a component rather than through it.
In engines, a bypass valve routes oil or coolant past a filter or radiator when conditions require it—typically when cold fluid is too thick to pass through normally, or when a filter becomes clogged.
Turbochargers use bypass valves to release excess pressure.
The principle extends to any system where temporarily circumventing a component serves the overall function.
