decalcification

Losing mineral content

Decalcification is the loss or removal of calcium from bones, teeth, or other calcified tissue.

The process can occur naturally through disease or aging, or deliberately in laboratory preparation of specimens.

Calcium-rich structures that undergo decalcification become softer and more fragile: The dentist warned that acid erosion was causing decalcification of her tooth enamel.
