wall plates
Top of studs
Wall plates are the flat covers that fit over electrical outlets, light switches, and other fixtures mounted in walls.
They conceal the wiring and junction boxes behind, providing a finished appearance: We replaced the old beige wall plates with brushed nickel ones.
In construction, a wall plate is also a horizontal timber at the top of a wall that supports roof rafters or floor joists.
