flame-retardant
Resists catching fire
Flame-retardant describes materials or chemicals that resist catching fire or slow the spread of flames: flame-retardant fabrics, flame-retardant coatings on children's pajamas.
The term applies both to substances naturally resistant to burning and to treatments applied to make materials less flammable.
As a noun, a flame retardant is a chemical compound added for this purpose.
