venationes

Arena animal hunts

Venationes were spectacles in ancient Rome featuring wild animal hunts and fights staged in amphitheaters.

Exotic beasts—lions, elephants, bears—were pitted against each other or against trained hunters called venatores.

These events often accompanied gladiatorial games and demonstrated Rome's reach across distant lands.

The morning venationes preceded the afternoon's combat between gladiators.
