underlife
Secret social world
Underlife refers to the hidden or unofficial social world that exists beneath the surface of an institution or community—the informal networks, unwritten rules, and covert activities that run parallel to official structures.
In sociology, the term describes how inmates, students, or employees create alternative systems of meaning and exchange within constraining environments: The prison's underlife included elaborate trading networks and coded communication.
More broadly, underlife can mean any concealed dimension of existence: the underlife of a seemingly quiet suburb.
