tollhouse
Road fee station
A tollhouse is a small building at a toll road, bridge, or gate where travelers pay fees to pass.
Historically, tollhouse keepers lived on-site to collect payments at all hours.
The word also appears in Toll House cookies—chocolate chip cookies named after the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts where they were invented.
