turnpikes

Roads requiring payment

Turnpikes are roads, especially highways, where travelers pay tolls.

The original turnpikes had barriers—spiked poles that turned—to block passage until fees were paid.

Now the word simply means a toll road: Take the turnpike to avoid local traffic.

In American usage, major interstate toll roads often carry the name: the New Jersey Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
