welded tuff
Heat-bonded volcanic ash
Welded tuff is volcanic rock formed when hot ash and pumice fragments fuse together after explosive eruption.
The material lands while still hot enough that particles compress and bond under their own weight, creating dense, glass-rich rock.
Welded tuff often shows flattened pumice fragments called fiamme and may display flow banding from the original pyroclastic flow.
