trunk road
Primary travel route
A trunk road is a major highway connecting cities or regions, forming part of the primary road network.
The term is chiefly British, referring to roads maintained by national rather than local authorities: The A1 is one of Britain's oldest trunk roads.
In American usage, the equivalent would be a highway or interstate.
