triploid

Three chromosome sets

Triploid describes a cell or organism with three complete sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two.

Most animals and plants are diploid, but triploid individuals occur naturally or through breeding.

Triploid fish and oysters are often sterile and grow larger, making them commercially desirable: triploid trout, triploid watermelons (seedless because they can't reproduce normally).
