tree-hugger

Nature-loving advocate

Tree-hugger is a mildly disparaging term for an environmental activist or someone deeply concerned with protecting nature, particularly forests.

The image evokes someone literally embracing a tree to prevent it from being cut down.

While originally dismissive, some environmentalists have reclaimed the term with pride.

The developers called us tree-huggers, but we saved that old-growth forest.

The term can describe anyone perceived as excessively sentimental about environmental causes.
