trackball

Rotating cursor controller

A trackball is a computer pointing device consisting of a ball held in a socket, rotated by the thumb or fingers to move the cursor.

Unlike a mouse, the device stays stationary while the ball moves: I switched to a trackball to ease my wrist strain.

Trackballs were common on early laptops before touchpads became standard.
