plain-sawn

Tangentially cut wood

Plain-sawn describes lumber cut with parallel passes through a log, producing boards where the grain meets the surface at angles less than 45 degrees.

This efficient method yields wide boards with distinctive cathedral-shaped grain patterns but makes the wood more prone to warping and cupping than quarter-sawn lumber.

Also called flat-sawn.

Plain-sawn oak shows dramatic figure but moves more with humidity changes.
