tire chains
Winter wheel wraps
Tire chains are metal chains wrapped around vehicle tires to improve traction on snow and ice.
They grip slippery surfaces that would defeat ordinary tires.
Most drivers keep them in the trunk for emergencies or mountain travel: We had to stop and put on tire chains before crossing the pass.
Some jurisdictions require them on certain roads in winter conditions.
