tildes

Marks over ñ's

Tildes are the wavy diacritical marks (~) placed over letters in certain languages—most commonly the Spanish ñ, where it indicates a palatalized n sound: señor, jalapeño.

In Portuguese, tildes mark nasalized vowels: São Paulo.

In informal digital communication, tildes sometimes bracket words for emphasis or irony, or trail off to suggest playfulness: ~fancy~, see you later~.
