home directory

Personal file location

A home directory is the default folder assigned to a user account on a computer system, where personal files, settings, and configurations are stored.

On Unix-like systems, it's typically /home/username; on Windows, something like C:\Users\username.

The tilde (~) is shorthand for home directory in many contexts: cd ~ returns you there.
