Tironian notes

Tironian notes are a system of shorthand invented in ancient Rome, attributed to Cicero's secretary Tiro.

The system used symbols to represent words, phrases, and common letter combinations, allowing scribes to record speech at speed.

Tironian notes remained in use through the medieval period; the ampersand (&) descends from the Tironian symbol for *et* (Latin for "and").
