tidal surge
Coastal water rise
A tidal surge is an abnormal rise in sea level caused by storm systems pushing water toward shore.
Strong winds and low atmospheric pressure during hurricanes or severe storms force seawater inland, often causing catastrophic coastal flooding.
The term is sometimes used interchangeably with storm surge, though tidal surge emphasizes the interaction with normal tidal patterns: The tidal surge from the hurricane reached fifteen feet.
