thylacines

Extinct striped marsupials

Thylacines were carnivorous marsupials native to Australia and Tasmania, also called Tasmanian tigers for the stripes across their backs.

The last known thylacine died in captivity in 1936, making them a symbol of human-caused extinction.

Despite occasional unconfirmed sightings, the species is considered extinct: Scientists are attempting to de-extinct the thylacine using preserved DNA.
