three-decker

Layered lunch stack

A three-decker is something with three levels or layers.

The term originally described warships with three gun decks, then extended to triple-decker sandwiches and, in New England, residential buildings with three floors of apartments stacked vertically.

The neighborhood is full of classic three-deckers from the early 1900s.

A three-decker novel was a Victorian publishing format that split stories into three separately bound volumes.
