tape delay

Live broadcast lag

Tape delay is a technique in broadcasting where audio or video is recorded to tape and played back after a short interval, typically a few seconds.

This buffer allows producers to remove profanity, technical glitches, or other unwanted content before transmission reaches the audience.

The method originated with actual magnetic tape but the term persists even with digital systems.

Live call-in shows use tape delay to catch offensive callers before they go to air.
