macchiato

Milk-marked coffee drink

A macchiato is an espresso "stained" with a small amount of steamed milk or foam—the name comes from Italian for "stained" or "spotted." The drink preserves espresso's intensity while slightly softening it.

A latte macchiato reverses the ratio: steamed milk stained with espresso.

Coffee chains have expanded the term to cover various espresso-and-milk drinks that bear little resemblance to the original.
