molybdenum disulfide
Silvery layered mineral
Molybdenum disulfide is a chemical compound of molybdenum and sulfur, occurring naturally as the mineral molybdenite.
Its layered crystal structure gives it lubricating properties similar to graphite, making it useful in high-temperature and high-pressure applications where conventional lubricants fail: The bearings were coated with molybdenum disulfide.
Often abbreviated MoS₂.
